Applied Yoga for Flautists

I am currently researching how yoga applied directly to playing the flute can help Flute players.

One meaning of the word Yoga is Union

Using ancient yoga techniques the aim is create a union between you and the flute.

This includes.

Hatha Yoga Asanas (Physical Postures)

Pranayama (Breathing Practices)

Dhyana (meditation)

The goals are:

to develop the ability to relax at will.

to deepen the qualities of attention and concentration

to increase physical and mental stamina in performance and practice

Conspiracy of Flutes- France 2007

I was delighted to assist Atarah Ben-Tovim at her Flute course in her home this October in France. I gave workshops on applied yoga for flautists each morning. Topics that we covered were

-Relaxation and the use of imagery to connect the feeling of calm when in a stressful performance situation.

-Unlocking tense shoulders and arms

-Ways to reconnect with your inner self and cultivating self-belief and trust in your performance.

This is what some of the participants had to say:

“Niall’s Yoga for Flautists at Atarah Ben-Tovim’s Flute course in France was an invaluable start to the day. The imagery he used was very easy to understand and associate with ‘seeds in flowerpots’, ‘tubes without any kinks’ etc and made a whole lot of things click into place. He made me want to explore this whole area more! …. I shall relay what I discovered on to my husband who is an opera singer!!”

“Very Calming and raised the standard of insecure players amazingly- it helped me enjoy the whole course more”
